  • Sex education – semen

    semenWarning!

What you are about to read might just be TMI. Proceed only if you have a curious mind and are not easily grossed out.

Why does semen smell like Clorox:
‘Testicular fluid and sperm are odorless. It’s the part of the semen that comes from the seminal vesicles and the prostate that add the odor. …the smell of male ejaculate is the fault of spermine, which is made by the prostate. Spermine is a member of a chemical family known as polyamines,’ per Paul Joannides in Guide To Getting It On.

When a penis spits in your eye:
(Paul’s wording is so much more colorful than mine.)
‘As for a reader’s question about why her boyfriend’s ejaculate burns so much when it gets in her eye: While the concentration of spermine in semen isn’t nearly as high as when you order it from a chemical supply house, pure spermine carries some seriously harsh warnings.

The material safety data sheet for spermine says: Danger! Corrosive.  Causes eye and skin burns… May cause chemical conjunctivitis and corneal damage. Causes skin burns.’

    Is ejaculate an antidepressant?:
According to the research, yep, it sure is.  Now, I don’t think that collecting ‘donations’ in a cup from your male friends will give you a nice trip, but researchers believe that the hormones in semen are absorbed into a woman’s body through the vagina, and some of those hormones (estrogen, testosterone, follicular-stimulating hormone, leuteinizing hormone, prolactin and prostaglandins) have an anti-depressive effect.

    Semen allergies:
Yes, it is possible to be allergic to semen, or more accurately, to a particular protein in semen.  If you suspect an allergy, try using a condom to see if the symptoms disappear.  Although, not a latex condom – in case you are allergic to latex.  I know…complications are not fun when you are just trying to have sex.

I think that’s enough info for now.  I’ll save the data on calories, volume, speed, color, taste, and viscosity for another post.
